Picture shows the opening of the 18th Celtic Connections festival, sponsored by ScottishPower, which launched in spectacular style today with a Torchlight Parade through Glasgow city centre led by the Rt. Hon. Lord Provost Robert Winter and the ScottishPower Pipe Band which was followed by a glittering opening concert featuring an international cast of musicians, The Pulse of the World. Running from 13th - 30th January, Europe's premier winter music festival celebrates its 18th birthday this month. Over the next 18 days, approximately 1,500 folk, roots, world, traditional, indie, bluegrass, jazz and classical musicians will perform in around 300 events taking place in 19 venues across Glasgow as part of the festival. Celtic Connections' diverse programme celebrates the influence of Celtic music on cultures around the globe, with acts from as far afield as India, Cameroon, Japan, Israel, Argentina, Senegal as well as across Europe, the USA and Canada all visiting Glasgow to take part in the festival. In November the festival unveiled that it had scored a major coup in bringing Tom Jones to Glasgow for an exclusive performance of his acclaimed latest album, Praise and Blame, a highly acclaimed collection of gospel, blues and spiritual songs. The musical icon's appearance at the festival is part of its gospel strand (a major programming theme in 2011), which also features Mavis Staples, The Blind Boys of Alabama and Bettye LaVette.
